From Québec to The World, the story goes on...

What is most remarkable about Rosheen, a Québec based group, is that they perform the traditional music of Ireland with such authenticity. Not surprising, really, when you realise that generations of Irish emigrants settled in the French regions of Canada offering a rich blend of cultures and traditions.

Founded in 1997 by singer-songwriter Lynn Vallières, Rosheen’s seven members are blessed with a passion for Celtic music. Appearances at events such as the Montreal International Celtic Music Festival, Stanfest in Nova Scotia, Festival du Voyageur in Winnipeg and the New France Festival in Québec City have helped spread their reputation across Canada. Rosheen has also performed on prestigious stages such as Celtic Classic in Bethlehem, PA, and many other festivals both in Canada and the United States where they were welcomed by warm and enthusiastic audiences. Their 2004 live performance to a full house of 1200 people in the Capitole de Québec, one of the city’s most prestigious venues was broadcast from coast to coast on CBC’s French and English networks.

Irish Dancing Magazine (Ireland) and Keltika (Italy) have given high praise to Rosheen for their music. The group can already be heard on the air in North America and Europe, and with booking and management deals having just taken place in Canada, America and Europe, more focus is being planned for radio worldwide.

In addition to many traditional pieces, all played Rosheen style, the group performs original works by different band members, giving their self-titled CD a particularly original flavour. Jigs, reels and devilish polkas are intertwined with haunting ballads to give an amazing variety of style and pace to both their recordings and their stage shows.

The band is working on a new studio album, due in the late autumn of 2007.

Members of Rosheen

Lynn Vallières - Michel Hénault - Daniel Marcoux - François Matte
Grégoire Painchaud - Barry Nameth - Lyne Therrien

Lynn Vallières - Voice, recorder and bodhran

Founder of Rosheen, this naturally talented singer, recorder and bodhran player drives the band by the sheer power of her love and passion for the music. Self-taught, she has the happy knack of surrounding herself with extraordinary musicians and friends who, like her, have fallen under the timeless charm of Celtic music. Lynne's voice has a rare purity of tone, giving it an angelic quality which her Irish ancestors would be proud of. Her talent for singing was recognised when she was still a child. She quickly graduated from talent shows to television, featuring in 'Teen Track' (1979) singing one of her own compositions. That led to singing 9 songs for the show '100 Huntley Street', 'Michel Jasmin' and 'R.S.V.P.' closely followed by recording the theme song for the movie 'Meltdown'. She also sang in 'Opération enfant soleil' and Paul McCartney's 'Liverpool Oratorio' directed by Carl Davis and Bernard Labadie.

Michel Hénault - Guitar, arranger-composer and writer

Michel is supremely qualified as a musician, having a Bachelor of Music Education from Laval University where his list of tutors reads like a Who's Who of music. A background in jazz led him to work as a guitarist, vocalist, arranger, composer, author and MIDI programmer in several musical groups including Solen, The Answer (winner of the Studio FM Rock 93 contest), Néon, Nova, Daniel Marcoux Ensemble and Linda Racine, flirting with many musical styles — classical, jazz, retro, commercial and progressive rock, country, dance music, top 40, blues, jazz fusion and big band before coming to traditional and, of course, Celtic music which eventually led him to Rosheen. His performances bring together all his earlier influences showing that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

Daniel Marcoux - Double bass and bass

A native of Québec, Daniel Marcoux studied music composition and jazz improvisation before going on to play both electric and acoustic bass and working as a musical arranger. He formed and led his own jazz bands, Sarega, 5X jazz, S’miles and the Daniel Marcoux Nonet who perform his original compositions. He has played many jazz venues across Canada and participated in many jazz radio broadcasts such as "Jazz sur le vif" on Radio-Canada with his Nonet, Lucie Roy and the Bliss jazz quintet; 'Silence on Jazz' with Linda Racine and 'Jazz Beat' with singer Mary Barry. His style of improvisation is mostly inspired by bassists Eddie Gomez, Ray Brown, Charles Mingus and Miroslav Vitous. Since 1998 he has led his own band of 17 talented musicians, participating notably in the grand opening of the Rodin exposition as well as the Dallaire and Kriegoff exposé at the Québec Fine Arts Museum.

François Matte - Wooden flute and tin whistle

« The wooden flute : the world’s nicest instrument! » Here’s what François Matte is used to say! François has been playing the wooden flute and the tin whistle for 6 years. François started the piano at the age of 6 and follow courses up to 15. Then he studied trombone for 3 years. In college, he studied jazz on the piano and arrangement for big band at the « Cégep de St-Laurent » in Montréal. Then he flys out to discover the world. During this trip, he gets in touch with traditional irish music and he starts to play the tin whistle. In 2000, he spent the summer in Ireland and bought his first wooden flute. Travelling around the country, he spends all of his time in sessions and discovers what he loves the most : the spirit of irish sessions. Up to then, François, been audidact, spends all his free time on the wooden flute, the tin whistle and the bodhran.

Grégoire Painchaud - Fildde, mandolin, keyboard, arranger-composer and writer

Grégoire Painchaud plays violin, guitar, mandolin and piano. He has joined Rosheen in december '98 where he was first invited to play piano, but progressively introduced to the group his skills as a mandolin and violin player. He discovered his own talent as a composer and arranger and eventually became the band's musical director. At the age of five, he was admitted to the "Conservatoire de Musique de Québec". At the age of only nine, he plays solo with the "Orchestre Symphonique de Québec". Two years later, he wins the silver medal of "Concours provincial de Sillery" in chamber music with his sister and his brother. It's at the age of fourteen that he officially made he's bio as a professionnal musician on the touring train "Le Tortillard". Soon, he would take part in four tours in Europe, accompanying two dance companies. He has also played at the Mondial Folklore Festival of Drummmondville and Canada's second largest country festival, St-Tite. Despite the fact that he is growing more and more occupied with Rosheen (wich is after all a real good thing!), he manages to play a lot locally in Québec City and from time to time with Québec's most beloved artists such as France D'Amour, Lulu Hughes, Normand Brathwaite, Paul Piché and many others.

Barry Nameth - Drums and percussions

A member of Rosheen since october 2005, Barry was born in Hamilton, Ontario and later moved to Trois Rivières, Québec where he spent most of his teenage years. He got his first drum at the age of 13 as a Christmas present from his parents. He started playing with other Saint Patrick’s High schoolmates, entertaining on Friday night dances with the music of The Ventures, The Fendermen and other Rock & Roll favorites. After graduating High School he did a year at the Montréal Fine Arts School , playing on the week-ends with a trio called The Tempos. After a year of school he decided to go full time on the music scene so, purchasing a second hand Ludwig combo kit (which he still owns), he teamed up with a quartet working at a local Trois Rivières night club (Cabaret O’Flammes). In the spring of 1967 he joined the Billy Martin Orchestra and traveled with them for three and a half years, doing the R&B circuits up and down the American and Canadian east coast, from Atlantic City to Halifax, Nova Scotia. He says that this was the best schooling he ever had, meeting up with great musiciens and learning the ropes. In 1971 he ended up in Québec City, playing at the very popular Shamrock Dance Club playing dance and top 40 tunes. He has been in Québec ever since, doing many recording gigs at the Denis Champoux Recording Studio and playing with different « Retro » bands. During the « Nuit Black » and « Nuit Bleues » jazz festivals days he played the local bars with jazz pianist Jacques Faucher and bassist Daniel Marcoux, accompanying some great singers such as Stephanie Biddle, Geraldine Hunt and Katie Budda. Teaming up with the Andrée Dupré Blues Band for a couple of years in 2000 and sitting in with the Jay Sewall Cajun Blues Band the last two years, Barry is a regular with the Glenn Gillis and the Blues Experiment formation. Barry says that he is proud to be a member of Rosheen and seeing that his mother was born in Dublin, Ireland, he can really appreciate the Celtic sounds of the band.

Lyne Therrien - Fiddle

Lyne Therrien was born in Québec and at the early age of 5 was holding her very first violin. From that moment on, her enthusiasm for the instrument was already setting in and her undeniable talent amazed her entourage in her first years of apprenticeship. Being somewhat of a perfectionist, she enrolled in the Québec Music Conservatory and later on furthered her musical skills at the Laval University Music Academy. Although not certain, in the beginning, to turn her passion for the instrument into her professional livelihood, being very much in demand she became very active as a freelance violinist in the Québec City area and devotes a great deal of time teaching the instrument. She has been performing now for the past twenty years with many diversified ensembles and at times experiencing the pleasure of playing with philharmonic orchestras, accompanying well known personalities on stage as well as contributing to many studio recording sessions. Infatuated with her instrument and fascinated by its multiple possibilities, she developed a profound respect for it and the many styles of playing that were available to her. Enlivened with this enthusiasm, she rapidly discovered the vast folkloric and traditional repertoires, the authenticity of their styles and the kind of liberal improvisation they allow but most of all, this kind of music exploits her enormous potential the best. She holds great pride in joining Rosheen, sharing with its other members the desire to pass on the authentic echoes of Ireland, the richness of its festive roots, as well as it’s most touching nostalgia.
